Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) — medication safety for dogs and cats
Call your vetReference for: dogs and cats.
Overview
Aspirin is an NSAID that is sometimes discussed in veterinary contexts, but human formulations vary (coated, doses, combination products) and cats metabolize salicylates poorly. Do not give aspirin at home unless your veterinarian has specifically directed a plan — accidental ingestion or wrong strength can still be harmful.
Symptoms
Vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach ulcers, panting, wobbly gait
Typical onset
1–8 hours
Formulations
“Low-dose” and “regular” strengths differ; combination products may include caffeine or other drugs.
What to do
Contact your veterinarian urgently for any known or suspected ingestion. Bring product type, mg strength, and approx. amount.
