Overview
Opioids can cause profound sedation and respiratory depression in pets, especially when combined with other sedatives. Some formulations include acetaminophen or ibuprofen, adding separate poisoning risks. Fentanyl transdermal patches are a special hazard if licked or applied to fur.
Symptoms
Sedation, pinpoint pupils (may vary), slow breathing, collapse, vomiting
Typical onset
15 minutes–few hours
Formulations
Patch adhesive and residue can transfer — handle with gloves.
What to do
Emergency care if ingestion is uncertain or any symptoms are present. Bring patches/bottle.
