Overview
Metformin can cause severe stomach upset and, rarely, more serious metabolic issues in dogs after large ingestions. Cats are less commonly affected by accidental metformin ingestion, but any non-veterinary medication should be assessed.
Symptoms
Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, collapse (severe cases)
Typical onset
1–12 hours

Extended-release tablets can behave differently after ingestion.
